JOHN POLKINGHORNE (Week 7)

Revered Polkinghorne; a scientist and mathematical physics. Christianity has been in his lives since childhood. Natural Theologists-evidence in divinity God created certain things. Two important divine purpose 1) rational beauty of the world, he says that we need to understand why things occur the way they do. Understanding nature, science from Einstein and understanding survival. "Beautiful mathematic" a discovery on how God made the world and how the universe is made up. Higher order is present in the universe and how it is all about. The principle that he talks about is how much God is involved in everyone's life. Since the universe has been around God has always been around for the world to be a purpose of the universe. Physical example he talks about is the stars and without them we will burn. He also talks about gravity, "raw material of life" nuclear furnes of the stars. He says the world is much more complex than imaginable. Strangest of the quantum world, on how things should behave and they should work. The world in his eyes is not "mechanical" through God. Measurement problem; we find in the world and physics do not understand the basis of the quantum theory. He has a trans personal experience of God. He says there is a problem with evil, through suffering, crime, death and pain.

Edgar Cayce and the Skeptic: Talks about how open mindedness is important for people to understand what is going on. A skeptic who is involved with someone else ideas on how a person should think. Ironically people need to not always know what things are about. People are different in how they see opinions and how it happens. The article also talks about another man Johnson
who in the end did not see proof of Cayce. In this article Cayce has touched on many peoples
lives on how they react. In Carce writings he should be looked upon as someone who knows what he is talking about. Some skeptics always talks about how people are content with what they have. Cayce, wanted people to look at him and see what he was talking about he does not have to prove himself for people to admire him.

Mark Juergensmeyer (week 5)

Terror in Mind of God: Religion has played a role in everyone's life. In one way or another now a days religion is being more abused in our world. Juergensmeyes, talks about his trip going to Baghdad trying to understand the hatred of the American people and there religion. He wonders why there are more violence in religion and why it is becoming more damaged. He said that usually many religion is due to a lack of understanding of education. Issues need to be addressed of different cultures. When in Baghdad he saw politician, clerics, and normal people about religion. There is a need of understand of Suni'e of why Americans are in Iraq. He talks about how people such as Muslim and how they are so into what is going on in there world. He talks about how he was worried why suicide bombers were doing what they were doing. He wanted to know why they though about other religions the way they did? Safety in Baghdad worried him and his crew due to religion conflict. Elections did make a difference in Iraq, yet there are many people who want Americans to be gone. Iraq's people want to know why American is still there? what do they see to fulfill? People think the Americans are there for Saddam, yet they need to understand the presence of trying to rebuild a country. He talks about Saddam was weak, and was worried that the Americans are afraid of not Saddam. The Americans are afraid of Islamic, they still think they are fighting Saddam and people.Iraq's people think that Bush mission wants to keep Islamic people in a "bottle". Hidden and away from people, Americans are looked upon as people who are ridiculed. Isalm is a powerful religion that is coming very quietly, and is getting stronger. He talks about how religion is the "new voice".
Juergensmeyer, talks about how Indian people where he lived for a while there were Sieks. They loved their life and religion. In the 80's there was fighting between Sieks and government. Violence is still present in the economical ruins and government cannot do anything about it.He talks about a man who speaks of religious teachings. A man who rambled and preached and believed in what he wanted and who he wanted around them.

Should Skeptical Inquiry Be Applied to Religion?

The article talks about how science and religion has been a heated controversy. For years this debate goes back to history historic between the advocates of reason and the disciples of faith. The article talks about how the skepticism" (1) emphasizes doubt and knowledge, and (2) focuses on inquiry and the genuine possibility of knowledge. Where does it come from and is it learned through family or environment? The most reliable hypotheses are because they are from inquirers and tests that confirm they can be repeated. Scientific hypotheses and theories are misguided and are unsure. There are some open question in the future discoveries. Can There Be a Science of Religion? this section talks about how some argued that religious phenomena-matters of faith-are entirely beyond the science realm and cannot be proven or talked about.

The Physics Behind Four Amazing Demonstrations

Willey, interested in psychics and wanted to get people's attention. In order to do that he had to spread the word on the importance of psychics in a dramatic way. Walking on a broken glass technique purpose of his demonstration is that what we may perceive to be true may be wrong. Like walking on glass ask any normal person they would say, "no way". However the best way to perceive this is the fact that in order to do anything you must take acknowledgement that it can happen. There are ways to go around things that seem dangerous and scary at the time. His next experience was dipping his fingers in molted led, and bed of nailed and breaking a bed of blocks. He is a very unusual man with a high education level my question is what is the purpose of him doing all this crazy stuff? To prove a point on physics what one perceive something is may not be the same once you do it.
Ken Miller on Intelligent Design

Event on intelligence design. Earth science, geography and looked about at physics. Gravity, approaches on what is going on. 6 parents promote religious point of view. Court asked religious stickers to be takes off, ridiculed and discriminated. The sticker was about religious material on evolution, why single out evolution? Because it is a theory and people can say that facts is not an option. Theories explain facts and unite them, and looking at what is happening in the history. Explanations on matter and open mildness people. Teenagers are looked at adults are certain at everything and know what is going on. Science is built on theories on what is happening. Single out evolution is a very bad science evolution. Single out 1 topic constitutional prohibited.

John Maynard Smith and Evolution

Major figure in 20th century evolutionary biology. Game theory and natural selection. Interviewed, evolutionary biologist a moment understanding natural selection. Smith, read Darwin and remembered about religious parts of his life growing up. He became excited new philosophy with his world views. Normal relief that religion, he looked at religion as a burden. It looks reading Darwin made him believe what was to happen. Smith, torn Atheist and Agnostic he was torn between which to do. Give up faith he felt horrible and ridiculed inside. Well known as a premiere bringing game theory in to biology. Thinking cautiously rational beings. Smith, applied to genes and looked what was going on to applying the tool. Viruses, Smith learned that gambling the mathematical notation the idea of paying off. People wanted to know what was being perceived and how people looked at things.
Beyong Belief Session 1& 2

Session 1
Concerned with science and impact on society. Instigated programs on communicational science. Program tribute to the peers, acknowledge people whom made a difference. Covering 1)religion and science 2) broad thread, can we be God with God? 3)If not God then What?. Spirituality and they talked about purpose when people have lost hope. They want to know if science can help us understand what is going on in the world. Topic 1, clashes of cultures from around the world. Terrorist plot uncovered November 4 in London gun powder leader and managed to get in a rental property. There are people from around the world who feel ridiculed by separation on cultures. Catholic extremist clashes of cultures and religion has been going on for such a long time.Wineburger, example of two cultures science and religion. Tense between science and religion has been around for years. 62% do not believe humans revolve from human life forms.
Session 2
Science vs. religion section. Image of cosmos may perceive as religious. Universe pictures and stride. Neil, Darwin exhibit articles on relevance of revolution. Elements that can help us see how one can see the religious backgrounds. Ptrolemy, greatest scientist ever Arabic he suggests the geocentric universe. Position on beliefs on how people see personnel God. Scientist who believe in God is only 40%.Neil, talks about the social economics and how it will help us perceive the extra ordinary. This will help us understand on how we see the world as a religious background. Scientist are people yet are prejudice that they do not see what is going on and happening. Have religion on how we see what we will know what science is all about.

Assigned Reading 4

Dawkins, speaks about a child's mind is all about sucking in information around them. Getting the information they want and figuring out what they need to do what they have to do to get with in the other "groups". A way for a child to belong in an environment and figure out what they need to learn. The author talks about human are like computer sucking in all necessary information that needs to be in their. They want to learn what is going on and how things are being looked at. Virus clones itself to be like others. A way for it to act like others and be informed on what is going on with the world around them. Gaining protection from the right information is like trying to get information from the computer. Or like downloading information from a computer to ensure the information is set in order. The ecological systems are fortunate to be a part of the wonders of what is going on in our world.

Assigned Reading 3

What is cold Reading?
Cold reading is defined when the reader does not know anything about the client in advance. There is nothing difference or peculiar about cold readings. Everyday people do it for the sake of understanding a certain topic everyday. Readers presume that people who have problems are due to the fact that there is something wrong with them everyday. A good cold reader knows how to what the author called "set the stage". Let people know what is going on and how things are getting done. Not only has that showed people how they can get information and how to perceive it in a timely manner. Drama is always making people more interested in what they are reading and how things are being done. Information is very important to develop and people to understand on what they need to do. Measuring people's reaction on how they are to feel and see what they think of what they have just read makes it important for them to know what is being read and what is going on. To get the best results you have to look at the positive actions to get a great reaction to what is going on and how things are perceived in a timely manner.

Assigned Readings 2

Jones, give an example of we are like librarians. Wanting to seek and know what is going on in our world. The internet is another way to look at stuff and see what is really out there. Information is know at the click of our fingers and can be given to us within minutes. As to before it is given to us only in books, references and gravitational notes.Librarians take there job very seriously by thinking they themselves are teachers and seekers of trying to get people the best knowledge and understanding about a subject that they want information for. Using the correct database and internet information will help someone understand what they are doing in an accurate and precise manor. Literacy is important in understanding reading and notes of what is out there. Teaching someone how to think critically is teaching them how to analysis on what they want to learn.

Assigned Readings 1

Middle Ages:
The funny thing is that when you are in grade school you remember the middle ages. The tale stories of witch craft and superstitious antics people used to perform. Yet people now in the year 2000 people believe in other supernatural antics such as UFO's and aliens from another world. Feyman, wanted to investigate the super natural and see if these things are really true. He did his research in tanks where people said they saw something. While reading I saw that he met a man who can bend rubber. That is all rumor he said she said, unless there is evidence and people seeing it for them people now a days do not believe anything. Feyman, talks about how teachers are teaching students how to read. That is all for a better education for themselves and will help them with their future. In order to have the public notice things they have to see it. In the public as something and let them judge on whether they want it in their lives or not. The truth I agree with Feyman will always come out. Even if you hide it for years to come they will spill out through knowledgeable information or evidence. In order to experience something and understand the subject then you can know what it is all about.

KARMA Film

The total affect of one's person action due to prejudice or discrimination. This will change how a perceives themselves and how they look at others. Lotto tickets are a way out of poverty, getting away from debt. Karma is all around and can happen anywhere and anytime. When someone you think will get away with something that they did (like the guy who grabbed and try to run with the guy's bag got hit with the car). The man who was depressed about life took out his anger on other women. Physically by slapping her and she retaliated by getting a gun and shooting him. How do we know how long he has been beating her? Questions that makes you wonder how long a person goes through physical and emotional abuse before they get hurt.

Bertrand Russell

Thinking in exactly is a biased state of mind in how we think. Perception for people is always around us and how we assume things. Philosophy comes in many different forms. Clarity is all about clear thinking and important to man kind. Prejudice come within a person and that in turns make people do bad things.

Richard Feynman

It is amazing how someone sees a flower is so different then how we see it. Feynman, bring mystery, excitement to of all things a flower. He is very one sided about science and universe. He asks why about everyday life and feels he has a limited intelligent. He talks about his father, a military man used to read a dinosaur book. This made him as a young child dream of what reality looks like. As he gets older he looks at the reality of stories from book, and feels that things usually die out. He remembers his father and him as a child in the park as looking at nature. His father taught him about the signs and name of each bird in each language. To learn about a certain object, animal Feynman started seeing thing why and how thing work. From his wagon as a child to how things move. Pushing on things, "nurture" deep understanding of knowing something and knowing what it is to find about knowing something.

11. Why does Richard Dawkins consider religion a "virus" of the
mind? Do you agree or disagree? According to the reading he says Dawkin’s says “firstly, a readiness to replicate information accurately, perhaps with some mistakes that are subsequently reproduced accurately; and, secondly, a readiness to obey instructions encoded in the information so replicated.”Religion is being replicated by people who believe in the religion. This in turns makes them speak the words to others and show them what the religion is all about. This then goes to someone else it is like a chain reaction. He uses the child and computer virus as an example in explaining how things can be copied so fast and be replicated such as a religion.

Substantiate your view.
12. Give an example of a "cargo cult" belief and critically analyze
it from a scientific perspective? Hint:
think of something that people believe in that lacks overwhelming
evidence to support it. Feynman cautioned that to avoid becoming cargo cult scientists, researchers must first of all avoid fooling themselves, be willing to question and doubt their own theories and their own results, and investigate possible flaws in a theory or an experiment.

13. How does one do "science" according to Richard Feynman. Why is
this form of science so important to
human beings? This part of science is important to human beings because it let’s us understand the beauty of nature. How can such a view of science help enrich one's
appreciation for beauty? This can help understand the” appreciation” of what we see and what has been changed so other people and nature can make interesting questions. Be sure to give
YOUR own example of Feynman's point (no "flowers" allowed).Best example that I would use is the sky and the clouds. The
colors are so beautiful such as blue and white and you can see the way the birds fly by it. When people are sad they will look up at the beautiful sky and look at the beauty of nature. Looking at objects not just books it is essential to teach what you are doing and reading and why it is has evolved into what it is.

14. Give your interpretation of the movie "Karma." This film clip was so true. You always hear that if you do something bad something will eventually catch up and do something to you. The abuse and some criminal activity that took place in these films were all about a circle. A consequence of what can catch up to you when you least expect it.

15. Explain, in brief, Darwinian evolution and why John Maynard
Smith's contribution is important in
thinking differently about survival of the fittest. Darwinian has been around about evolution. Maynard, talks about natural selection and theories on different aspects of life. His theory according to the film about natural selection came back when he was in school. Maynard, was raised in the church yet know he talks about being an Atheist. He presumed religious philosophy because it can pertain how people will live their life. Different aspects on how a person views a religion and where will they go when they die.

16. What are Freeman Dyson's views on the "design" of the universe
or the purpose of humankind? Dyson’s, “design” of the universe of the purpose of humankind. He questions the obligations for God and how thing are perceived. He says that he is Agnostic yet feels that the design of the universe is a “mystery” in itself. “We have instincts of mind in the Universe”. I love this quote because that is so true. People from around the world and what people do with their religion is how they perceive there God’s.

17. What IS the "secret" that Faqir Chand discovered about religion
and its founders? Faqir, believes that there is no religion that can help you speak your mind. You have to believe in the outlooks of life for yourself. He says that he does not believe in miracles and say that he does not know anything. He tried to change the role of preaching and how he wanted to teach people that we need to help ourselves.

18. Explain the movie Eleven and what is YOUR interpretation of it?
In other words, what is the underlying message that the
director is trying to convey? The leader of the ruffians had a whole new aspect of the Middle Eastern after the death of his father. In the 9/11 unfortunate that took the lives of thousand of men, women and children. Due to this horrific terror attack on the U.S people are being discriminated against other cultures and ethnicity. There used to be a saying "do not judge until you know a person". Now people do not even want to shake hand with Middle Eastern people due to the threats that is still occurring everyday. The youth in society today are quick to judge and in the notion that they can handle all problems. They can relate to the Middle Eastern because they do not know what to do to not be ridiculed and judges the way they are. The director is trying to say that there are people who come from every aspect of life different cultures, ethnicity and religion. People are doing the best they can to makes ends meet for their family. The prejudice needs to stop among youths and adults. Because after all the youths are the one's looking up at the adults.

19. Why is distinguishing the message from the medium so important?
Use the Da Free John article as your context.

The medium is a person who represents information from beyond that we as critical thinkers can look at. Knowledgeable answers to questions about life and perspective and why people perceive society and religion on a bias knowledge sometimes.

20. What are Bertrand Russell's reasons for NOT being a Christian?
Do you agree or disagree with him? GIVE RATIONAL
ARGUMENTS FOR your position (pro or con).

I disagree with his answers because I feel they are biased. He is not going be sufficient and historical evidence. He is somewhat ridiculed and confused whether or not he should be a Christian.

21. Why does Kurtz believe that skepticism should be applied to
religion? Do you agree or disagree?

Religion like someone sexuality is based on individual preference. People need to know what they perceive themselves to do and how they go about doing it. I agree that people are always going to be skeptical on their religion and what they should or should not believe in.

22. Why is pretext, text, and context important in analyzing a book
or an argument. Provide your own example.

It is important to know and understand what you are reading. Even if sometimes the author sounds “bogus” and is speaking a lot of rubbish they usually will find evidence to back up there beliefs. Proof or evidence if an argument makes you not only look knowledgeable but it makes people respect your beliefs and know what you are teaching is true.

23. What is a "transformative" UFO encounter and does the author of
the Himalayan Connection really believe in UFOs as genuine
extraterrestrials?

Yes, the believe that UFO’s purpose is to be here and teach us something about our religion. ( I think is bogus). They want people to know that there are other types of life out there even though it does not seem true to what is really happening.

24. How does one think more critically when using online sources?
(hint: think of one of the required articles). Substantiate your
views.

I think it is based on what the author is writing and what you believe in. Articles are sometimes will make you think of how it relates to you own life. (Society, religion). However, some articles like UFO ‘s and the blinding of the children are used inventively to make me wonder where do people come up with this stuff to think about.

25. What are Steven Weinberg's views on religion? Do you agree or
disagree?

I agree, he talks about how everyone believes in a different religion. Usually society plays a key role in why they choose that religion. Not only society but also family. What you are born into and upbringing of what is going on.

26. Why is Sam Harris an atheist? Explain his reasons. Can you argue
against his views? If so, how?

Harris, believed that people’s view is each of their own and people need to see what is happening and what is going on. I do not agree with his views however I do not disagree with it either.

27. Of the first five installments of BEYOND BELIEF which speaker
did you find most persuasive? Explain why.

Professor Freeman, Religion is perceived by people differently. God is in the "universe" religion is based on one's belief. He claims to be a religious person, "a way of life" yet he does not label himself. He was raised a Christian but questions the purpose of people going to church just to take care of one another. Freeman, does not believe that Jesus was the son of God, yet he says that God himself is a mystery in itself. People have an instinct of mind in the universe. God is something that people are hard to understand. Cultures believe that they are who they are because of the God's. Freeman, believes that ethics believe that the greatest thing about religion is that "it last from century to century"

28. Ken Miller argues against Michael Behe's notion of irreducible
complexity and the notion of intelligent design in biology. Is he
right? If so, explain. If not, give your reasons why not.

No, biology has nothing to do with a person’s intelligence. If you think that the reason why a person is smart is due to their parents then that are another story. However a person individual preference on why they do the things they do is based on society and what they believe in.

29. In the conference BEYOND BELIEF, which speaker did you find to
be the weakest in terms of substance? Explain.

Paul Davis, “If not God then what?”. Non U.S participant. Religion is based on a post religious society. He believed in himself not a religious person yet he is ridiculing other speaker on religion and society. Davis feels that science is a better acknowledgement of what is going on. It is a way to talk about.

30. What constitutes a scientific education according to Huxley?32. Why is the book BELIEVER-SKEPTIC so critical of Ken Wilber and this thinking? Be specific in your answers.

Because everyone when it comes to religion is a skeptic and is based on knowledge and what they have heard and looked at. People’s individual biased is based on how they formed their idea and where does it come from.

Beyong Belief Sessions 6 & 7

The article talks about how science and religion has been a heated controversy. For years this debate goes back to history historic between the advocates of reason and the disciples of faith. The article talks about how the skepticism" (1) emphasizes doubt and knowledge, and (2) focuses on inquiry and the genuine possibility of knowledge. Where does it come from and is it learned through family or environment? The most reliable hypotheses are because they are from inquirers and tests that confirm they can be repeated. Scientific hypotheses and theories are misguided and are unsure. There are some open question in the future discoveries. His next experience was dipping his fingers in molted led, and bed of naild and breaking a bed of blocks. He is a very unusual man with a high education level my question is what is the purpose of him doing all this crazy stuff? to prove a point on physics what one perceive something is may not be the same once you do it.
