JOHN POLKINGHORNE (Week 7)
Revered Polkinghorne; a scientist and mathematical physics. Christianity has been in his lives since childhood. Natural Ethnologists-evidence in divinity God created certain things. Two important divine purpose 1) rational beauty of the world, he says that we need to understand why things occur the way they do. Understanding nature, science from Einstein and understanding survival. "Beautiful mathematic" a discovery on how God made the world and how the universe is made up. Higher order is present in the universe and how it is all about. The principle that he talks about is how much God is involved in everyone's life. Since the universe has been around God has always been around for the world to be a purpose of the universe. Physical example he talks about is the stars and without them we will burn. He also talks about gravity, "raw material of life" nuclear ferns of the stars. He says the world is much more complex than imaginable. Strangest of the quantum world, on how things should behave and they should work. The world in his eyes is not "mechanical" through God. Measurement problem; we find in the world and physics do not understand the basis of the quantum theory. He has a trans personal experience of God. He says there is a problem with evil, through suffering, crime, death and pain.

Critical Thinking 1,2,3,4,5
I value the course on critical thinking and was not given a class like this back in high school. Students should be able to be given the opportunity to take a class where they can use their thoughts on different subjects. This will empower someone to have an opinion, think for him or herself, and take a stand on what they believe in. On the basis that they can think of pro and cons, results and knowledge of what the world has to offer and them to the world. Children growing up are always listening to their family's opinions and view on political, economic and status on people. When they get older they should be able to have that knowledge to be able to chose a topic and think of themselves and input in ideas on their own.

Fallacy Files
Fallacy is defined as a mistake, logic and reasoning. This is a type of argument in the reasoning of people’s beliefs and attitude to their decisions. Aristotle, talks about correct reasoning and there are some that are incorrect. Studying fallacies is all about learning about the negative aspects of reasoning and why it is the way it is. Such as a sign that says "wrong turn" then that is due to reasoning from the people who put it there. The reason why they chose not to have it there and have something else and cars would get into ditch or crash. Fallacies also deal with bad arguments and reasoning why people do the things they do. Not all arguments are a normal and nice legitimate way to understand the reasoning. However it is about the self-actualization that the argument does have a basis and what it is about and there is information to back up the argument.
Richard Dawkins
Dawkins spoke of evolution and how we as human have nothing to do with the animal species. The human reproduction needs to continue so the fate of human life can continue and not become extinct. Each human has its place to achieve their own goals and attributes that it wants to contribute to society. Random mutation of animals Dawkins says is not good for the environment and dangers to human life. Dawkins also talks about homosexuals and there desire to reproduce and bear children of their own. Traits in homosexuality have to do with breast-feeding mother who have no proof. There is also what is called the "sterile theory" based on the effects of animals and there reproduction. Such as ants, rats and wasps. The article continues with DNA chromosome in different animals and species like monkeys that are similar to human beings.
Intelligent Design (Week 8)
According to the reading anti-evolution that natural biological being that is attempted to be explained by intelligent causes. The article talks about the existence of how God is around and aliens may be present. Intelligent design comes from Christian them; they are a group of people who oppose science evolution. They do not believe that evolution will answer any of their questions about God made this world and became what it is today. The article talks about the Judeo Christian God who spoke about by having a natural selection base that is beneficial for everyone to understand. The article questions Darwin’s reliability and the base where the information is coming from and what evidence came about when they were looking for a God.

Philosophy in Less than Five Minutes
Crop circles, believe or not believe? Existence may exist yet there have been interpretations that they are not real. Many people believe that they prey on people who like to see and come into news about unscientific. Is there an existence of aliens? Challenge the reality of crop circles and there is a doubt that they are true. Assuming that it cannot happen is not giving reasoning. The crop circles, which are these people that are doing it, create geometry? My opinion is why the crop circles are perfectly round and can be seen from so far up. I do agree that there is nothing that cannot be reproduced. The argument is whether or not the crop circles can be done in a matter of time before the morning.

Prayers is being questions Richard Sloan, research psychological factors of prayer and medicine. He talks about the UN holinesses of death. He examine the question is religion good for your health? Miraculous being coming from people who are becoming invulnerable to many illness. Health benefits in the world of medicine. They talk about the spirituality on prayer and how people who believe in prayer and the spirits. They themselves will be clean and going through a life with no disease. Sloan said there is a rise on irrational ism, the aspects of spirits cleaning your body and cleaning your soul of spirituality. There is no document of how spirituality can help modern life. There is no proof and there has been support from authors to religion and temples. Waxing and weaning of the rise of "the great awakening". It is the critical media that we see everything through media. This is all about how people look at the spirituality and some books are being marketed for research for money on the fact that faith can heal all. In my opinion I believe it is true without faith there will be a loss of what is there to believe in and less likely to feel that they should live on.

Critical Thinking Article
After reading this article it makes me wonder why there is not that many available courses on critical thinking. There are some things that students should learn more about on topics that affect there life everyday. Such examples, death penalty, abortion and God. All these need to thought about and should be investigated not only finding cons in them but also the pros about the benefits of learning new material. Remembering notes in class is another way for us to learn more about critical thinking. I have taken courses just to take them and move on to the next subject. If you asked what I learned in the course I would not remember just the grade that was received. We need to do critical thinking to try to understand what the course is about and what does the instructor want us to learn about it. Some things the instructor says are not all boring if they make it interesting and have people involved and relate it to our everyday life. Theses courses will be beneficial and remember what the courses are about and we can teach other. Critical thinking should be taught more and important for everyday use not only in school but also our society.

Article on Eckankar
The article was of David Lane's wanting for people to learn more about cults and religion. Eckankar, is a religion that does not talk about what it believes in. The cult that I remember growing up was the death of so many brain washed people in Waco. There was a religion that they believed in due to one man's belief that we can all go to heaven if we sacrifice our lives for that purpose. I do not believe in that, I think we are born through our family socially learned on what we believed in. We are exposed to so many religion through friends and other family members who have converted. There is a long list of what we need to do to sometimes be baptized in a church or mosk so we can convert into that religion. eckankar has a respect for other faiths and doesn't pressure people to join. Other philosophers as not being a cult have ridiculed Eckanakar. There is no God that they are said to believe in. Yet this group of Eckankar is growing in numbers and is now all over the world. They only speak of how people should live their lives and the dreams that they have at nights and what does that mean or how it is incorporated in their lives.

John Polkinghorne
In the article John Polkinghorne, talks about how scientific reasoning relates to everyday life. There are something’s that cannot be explained and needs to be investigated more. He talks about what we already know the universe (world) as we know today cannot be taken seriously. The reason why is because it is always changing and things are not always the same. Human beings are trying to figure out everything that goes on with the universe. They look at things in a perspective because humans do not see what is wrong until something is wrong. Edgar Cayce
Cayce, was seen as someone who had a psychic ability. Was known as a prophet to tell people there fortune. He became known as an someone who can heal people through his psychic on where was people suffering at. Many Christians were unbelievable towards him because he always spoke about how people can heal through the spiritual beings. In his later life he formed centers where spiritual healing can come about. His work was all about spiritual beings in the history of what is happening to patients. He has an unorthodox way o looking at people health and spirituality. Cayce was into hypnosis to people and he was all about entertaining people. Cayce was believed to have paranormal abilities, I think he just hyped himself as someone who can help other through spirituality. People have always talked about helping people through his speeches and talks.

James Watson
Wow he was only 23 when he discovered the structure of the DNA. That is really crazy I cannot imagine someone as smart as him. He was not even given the opportunity to work with DNA he was to work on viruses and the DNA just happened to fall in his lap. His discovery of nucleotide base pairs, he experienced a lot and went through a lot to get where he was. To be coming from a place where people look at you and always giving you opinion on what career you should go into. I think Watson did not care about being ridiculed. There was a lot of information on Autism, he talks about what behavior had to with Autism. I do not understand what this had to do so much with DNA when it talked more about the human behavior? I would hope there is more information on his talks about Autism. Watson also talks about nature vs. nurture, how the effects of how people need to look into how there social life and population play a key role in how there own life takes shape.
12. Why are certain religious zealots prone to use terrorism,
according to Professor Mark Juergensmsyer? What does Juergensmeyer
believe we should do in the future to mitigate such attacks?
According to professor Juergensmsyer certain religions use terrorism to relate to the world their religion because they want the government to acknowledge them. For example the religion of Islam is ridiculed and there is a lot of violence from people who know little to nothing about the religion. The reason why they attack Muslim is because they do not understand the moral and religious values of the religion as see it as a threat to them.
If you look back at history violence in religion is not common, they are just seen as terrorist now. Juergensmsyer said that the 3 reason why people chose to be terrorist against a religion is because they themselves are victims of there own terrorist, the fight about religion is not because of acknowledgement but of discrimination, last he says that we are all a part of the army of God believing in different things and trying to show people not all religion is the same.
Juergensmeyer believes that we should help reduce future attack on religion by having people from all religion think clearly and reasonably and morally. We do not need to always listen to leader such as a priest, monk for all the answers to our problems. Juergensmeyer believes that people placing ideas in our head sometimes blind us. We need to not be the followers but the leaders in our own acknowledgement of the religion. Terrorist needs to stop and it is a pity that people lose their lives due to lack of knowledge and discrimination. The government needs to put strict rules on violence against religions.
13. Is there sufficient evidence to support the claim that Edgar
Cayce was psychic? Use your critical thinking field guide to
substantiate your answer.
The article talks about how Edgar Cayce was known as someone who had “miraculous powers” and he was a psychic because he can read the future. He had psychic ability and this was known to be helping his patients. Dr. Lane talks about though his gift he is know known as a spiritual leader of some sort. There is no evidence that support the claim that he was a psychic. Just the reading from Johnson and Lane that he helped his patients. Yet it makes you wonder help them do what though? Even though he was right in predicting during the 20th century people will find documents of history. That could have been luck; there are times when I predict that it is going to be hot all day. This is due to guess, hypothesis by looking outside. Basically I think Cayce was giving out his own opinions on “paranormal “ abilities.
I think Cayce gave people “spiritual motivation” to his patient who believed they had nothing to live for. His writing has inspired people to believe that he was some sort of religious figurehead. In Cayce “psychic ability” 2 people endorsed him yet he did not show any evidence of miraculous results. In his writing he talks about paranormal events that he believed took place with him. Yet no one was ever present when these miraculous events took place. He could influence his followers.
14. Why is your professor so critical of cults?
Dr. Lane examines cults as either a religion or a premonition belief in a “God” or “gods”. Some and most cults evident in the Waco, Texas can be violent and abusive, not all cults or religion can be harmful to a person or their family. Lane, in my opinion another reason why he is so critical is because some spiritual leaders, psychics believe they have a gift
in distinguishing between a spiritual realm. Another reason why my professor is so critical about cults is adopt philosophies and try to pass the as their own. Cult leaders have so much influence over their followers, that they sometimes abuse it. By having
this kind of influence and power over someone gives the leaders satisfaction and motivation to convert as many people to join their cult.
15. What do the films reveal about Sai Baba's claim for paranormal
powers?
Sathya Sai Baba is considered by his “followers” to have mystical, unexplainable powers from levitating to healing. One of his most common feats was producing objects out of thin air. Sai Baba’s films claim on paranormal power shows that he believes he is here to restore people’s faith. Sai Baba believes that he was chosen to teach people important fact about life and improving their lifestyles. He also says that he does not want people who have chosen a religion to chose another one on the basis of his teachings. Yet he wants people to look at the world as he sees it. An aspect of different individual elements all rolled into one.
I think it is hard to trust someone when he is shown on video tricking a boy along with his “followers” that he has some sort of religious beliefs. He is like a magician with and art illusion to entertain people especially kids. Everyone is skeptical of miracles unless they see it for themselves. When they do they try not to believe what they have seen and find excuses on why it happened. So I think his claim for paranormal powers is a joke for people to follow him like a pet. Donate money to him and have him be there magician.
16. Why did Thakar Singh believe in blindfolding children? Why do
some religious followers lack critical thinking skills?
Thakar believed in blind folding children is a way for them to release negative force through meditation. He wanted them to be blindfolded and not be able to be distracted, yet I think blindfolding a child young as 5 is going to the extreme. It was like he wanted more followers so he started at a young age by putting ideas in their heads like he was a spiritual leader that he should follow. Makes you wonder how the parents could allow it. They to themselves are most likely his followers. Like a “cult” and they use blindfolding as a way of brainwashing these children.
The religious followers lack critical thinking skills is no different when a kiss butt employee agrees with what their boss says. They do it for recognition one of Thakar followers says dying for Thakar might be easier than living for him. Do they not think if someone were really religious they would do that? They are brainwashing people in believing they have spiritual powers. Not only are his followers lacking a brain they are only there due to some financial compensation most likely from him. That is why they have to talk to them and have it look like Thakar is such a high and powerful person.
17. JOHN POLKINGHORNE believes both in religion and science. Why?
John Polkinghorne in his interview believed in science and religion. He believed that both correlate one another. He grew up as a Christian and believed in God ever since he was a young child. He believes that both science and religion play a key role
in the universe. He has sufficient reasons for both in their own
ways. He believed there is a divine mind behind the world and why nature comes together so well with the animal special. Like a “circle of life” where as one dies anoher is reborn in the nutrients on the world. Polkinghornes, believed that our universe had the responsibility to show people about life. He believes that religion is a state in believing in a faith that we know about.
Polkinghorne, believed that science helped us understand our universe. As far as his concern with science it provides a lot to us. In his interview he talks about how "genes are read through DNA it's a part of genes we work but we are more than
that." Religion falls in place with the DNA and how we see the world and it is important for us to understand what is happening around us since birth, adulthood, and old age. Science can show us how life works but it cannot fully explain how it was created. That is why religion helps us understand in belief and science helps us understand the world itself.
18. How does Nietzsche critique religion? What are his main
arguments against a belief in God?
Nietzche critic religion by saying us as human comes into the world and then dies in it “ circle of life”. Our purpose if to go through life on the basis of what we find and finish (dying). In his article he says that there are reason why he is so critique on religion being that our human nature is good and therefore should be allowed to be expressed, the rules and morals written in scripture have not proven to be good in the lives of people and in
society. His main argument against God and the belief o God is that Christianity is just a foolish way for a person to comfort failure.
Nietzche believed that people did not want to know about the truth about religion all the time. The reason why they look into it is when the find a doubt in their life on the religion. I think something personnel must have happened to Nietzsvhe to be so judgmental on religion in his writings. He believes that we cannot cope with life without a purpose or meaning in our lives. Why we do the things we do and it is not always based on religion.
19. Why does James Watson believe that genetics holds the secret for
understanding human behavior? Why do some people resist believing
that we are just bundles of DNA?
Watson believed that genetics hold the secret for understanding human behavior is because we are alike the other people with the same jeans. (for example; our parents, behaviors).Watson was a very intelligent man studying the DNA at the age of 23.He says that Autism had a lot to do with human behavior. Autism sometimes genes tend to go wrong somewhere. People with Autism usually have a low IQ. They usually have no reaction, repetitive behavior, some do not speak. He explains in his lecture how genetics and DNA plays a part in neurological disorders.
He also talks about nature vs. nurture and how people look at things and take care of what they have. Humans tend to choose nurture over nature when in reality they should believe in nature more than nurture. People believe that we are a bundle of DNA because we are all based on genetics. The DNA came from our parents and how we perceive our lives through social interaction (nature) with others.
20. Why is intelligent design regarded as "junk" science by most
evolutionary biologists?
Intelligent design is regarded as “junk” because evolution is regarded as higher than intelligent design. It talks about how it should not be taught in schools. According to some scientist they want intelligent design to be passed as a “scientific belief” sadly it is not. It is based on “religious beliefs”. The only difference between these two is that intelligent design implies that someone or something far greater than
mankind created the world that we live in. Evolution
simply states that things that exist today simply evolved from some
other life form. There is nothing wrong with these being taught to students they are both in my opinion related to science and people should decide for themselves what they believe in.
21. What is the underlying theme behind the movie the ZAHIR?
The underlying theme behind the movie Zahir was the second movie The Zahir was based on Jorge Borges short story and revealed much about obsessions. The Zahir seemed to me to be a bad obsession that dwells in one's mind. When you go to sleep
you think about it and when you wake up and it seems to consume you. Zahir could be any person; shape or form is even more accordingly to how the humans perceive their obsessions. The Zahir stands for beings or things, which have a terrible, power and unforgettable and whose image eventually drives them mad. Labyrinth is an elaborate structure. In my opinion it's interesting when the narrator comes into conclusion that maybe behind his Zahir of the coin is actually God all along. God is what he can't get out of his mind, what he sees wherever he goes. This means that even when we do not feel it or see it God is around us everywhere.
22. How can little things that jiggle reveal the universe around us
(hint: think of the movie of the same title).
Things that jiggle can reveal the universe by Little Things That Jiggle was basically saying that everything that exists is made of smaller things. All things like a flower, a bed, or a human are made of smaller things that "jiggle.” The film, however, made me understands or gave me the knowledge on how these forces are put into play in our
universe and how they work. These are forces found everywhere, very literally. Starting with gravity; we don't see it but its there and it holds us to earth, keeps the earth in orbit rotation, keeps the orbit or our solar system and the movement it does around other
systems and stars along our galaxy. Nuclear interactions are seen everywhere,
heat in an open flame or a nuclear fission at its strongest level. As for electromagnetism it is energy liberated as the movie points out; it is energy. It is through these things that we get fields protecting or shelling planets and regions in space and
create natural phenomena as lightning.
23. Why is fundamentalism a mental disease, according to the movie
of the same title?
In the film "Fundamentalism is a Mental Disease" there was once
again the discussion of religion and science. In this film it states that fundamentalism is
taught to those who cannot think. At some point in time fundamentalist put out two texts against Darwin's idea and they were ridiculed because they did not have correct facts and science. Darwin's ideas have been appraised so much and still are to this
day. Basically the film is about people with small mind can easily believe in intelligent design and those that are more intellectual wont be so willing to dismiss facts. Darwin tries to explain evolution, as it is important for us to know about earth and science.
24. Name eight common fallacies when arguing for a position. Be sure
to give examples, perhaps drawn from your own life, for each of them.
1. Appeal to Ignorance:-This is when a claim is accepted be true when there is no evidence that can be found to prove it false. Just because we cannot find
any evidence against their claim, do not automatically justify their claim. A good example of this would be the belief that there is a God. Religious believers
argue that since there is no concrete evidence that can disapprove God that means with the proof of history (bible) that means there is an existence of God.
2. Emotional Appeal; Using emotions in an argument is not a proper way to prove or falsify reasoning. When emotions become involved, it often clouds people?
rational reasoning and judgments. A good example I can think of people who were hit in the Katrina. Especially the family when you see their faces on tv, it makes you feel sad that this happened and could have been prevented. Such as earlier awareness, earlier evacuations and set up for the red cross facility.
3. Appeal to Force; using any form of threat or force is not a real argument because you are just forcing someone to accept your viewpoint. An example would be the feud between North and South Korea. The president had become so influential
and powerful during that time that is why they’re economic is so powerful and strong.
4. Appeal to Celebrity; using celebrities to endorse products or services. An example would be celebrity-endorsing perfume. There is so many celebrity having there own perfume made by other company and placed in major department stores.
5. Quoting out of Context; this occurs when a person twists another person? Words to represent a different meaning. The election Clinton and Obama are fighting with each other on who has the better speech, endorsement and who is more experienced.
6. Bandwagon Fallacy; if everyone believes it,
then it must be true. An example would be drugs in high school. The pressure that everyone is doing it. There are kids that talk about how they tried it and come back and brag to other schoolmates how nothing happened to them and they love it. However, they do not see what is going on in their head physically inside. The organs getting damaged.
7. Black and White; It is like saying there are only two possibilities. If it is not A, then it is B. This is a fallacy because not everything can be successfully
argued this way. An example would be sugar and cream in your coffee or have it black. People chose what taste right and which one do they like.
8. Guilt By Association; This happens when an unfavorable person or group has a certain belief, and if anyone were to follow that belief, then that person would be looked down upon. This is very unfair because in the past,there have been groups or leaders who were corrupt, but at the same time, did believe in some ideas that were genuine.
25. Provide your own critical analysis (using the terminology
learned in this class, etc.) of the current "war on terrorism" as
waged by the USA. Your argument can be either pro or con or both,
provided that you substantiate your reasoning.
Going back to the question on religion and terrorism. Terrorists have existed for years and have been in training for years around the world as well. Americans, along with
the rest of the world have been fighting it. In Thailand the North and South are fighting against Islam. Bombs, attacks and kidnapping exist almost everyday. Terrorist has occurred everyday among religion and power. We are people did not wake up until the attacks on New York on 9/11. Terrorism is still present and here and will not go away anytime soon. Terrorism is an extremist at his/her most heightened point of
irritation. These are people whose sole purpose is to exist to take lives of other and themselves to have their voice heard. In my opinion the current war on terrorism has
reached the highest it has ever been in US history and continues to grow rapidly, and I believe this is time where terrorist are slightly ahead. As extreme as it is, I believe the US can create some situation that would decrease these attacks.
In my opinion I do not think the war is serving any purpose. We know we did the attacks on 9/11, which was Bin Ladin. Proven by CIA, and FBI documents. We should have people looking for him of course he committed a crime and killed many innocent people. However, what does that have to do with Saddam? Bush senior should have taken care of it when he was there in the beginning not a couple years later when his son is president. There are some other places that need our help Thailand, Africa they all need help also. This is due to the fact that people need help and those there things in other part of the world that need to be taken care of. Rather than having innocent men and women die in a country where they do not want us even there.

conference there was much heated discussion about religion and its
place. Provide a 750 word or more review of the entire series. Whose
arguments were most persuasive? Whose arguments were less so? BE
SPECIFIC.
Steven Wienberg,his arguments are less on science and religion. In the United States a series of evolution has been attacked, 62% do not believe are evolved from humans life forms. Miss guided biblical literature, resolved recognizing different concepts on religion. The Holy Ghost, We recognize science there is no problem, science deal with facts religion deals with values. West, agree with how religion and money plays a key role in people’s belief. Religion and science will have negative effects on each other. Ancient, history science in Genesis on earth flat and round. Less divine intervention, from Napoleon. Explain earth a comfortable place, Moths in Egypt end of educational beliefs. He does not talk about the United States need to teach children from a young age about science and religion. Fundamental religion, areas of hostility, he talks about science is down grated. Wienberg, talks about how science can justify itself in all aspects. Yet he says that there are always search of religion. This goes back to self-reliance, of course that is true yet he says that it occurs when we are adults. I disagree this happens when we are young until we grow up. Most important integrity of science, how about religion Wienberg? There are many people who believe in a religion to heal and look at. He says that he respects his colleague’s views but disagree he thinks that views of science and religion are important. Yet other scientist needs to look at other things rather than that all the time. How are they going to look at any other? He says there needs to be more acknowledgement in other parts of the world yet it needs to start here.
Lance Craft, he was most persuasive on religious. Einstein “the universe internal” . Beginning of the universe science had proved that religion is present everywhere. He talks about science proves to be Genesis. He comes with facts on laws of physics and does not say that if we do not believe in God evolution happened. There might not be a God that you believed in, but it did happen. People of faith are beyond; science is used to understand the world. Science teaches us on beliefs on what we see our faith is. Science there are things that are wrong, which I think it is great that he believes that it is true. He talks about balance homosexuality with different species. Reading from Old Testament killing children if they disobey. He was also persuasive when he talked about the skeleton that was discovered had American features on how old the earth is. He makes me understand science in a blunt way rather than from a scientific way.
27. What was the favorite thing you learned this semester?
I have learned so much this semester on philosophy and critical thinking. I did not think that critical thinking would apply to everyday use in our lives. For example, I am graduating, changing a career and getting married. Critical thinking made me think critical analysis of what I want to do and what is a good way to analyze and presume the conclusion of each outlook of life. Another thing I enjoyed learning was all the beyond belief films. In other sociology and psychology classes they did not interpret real life aspects and beliefs.
